Hon. Donald A. Greenwood Associate Justice

Justice Donald A. Greenwood was designated to the Appellate Division, Fourth Department on January 26, 2023, by Governor Kathy Hochul.
Prior to that, Justice Greenwood had served as a Supreme Court Justice since August of 2004, having been appointed by Governor Pataki and confirmed by the New York State Senate. He was elected to a fourteen-year term in November of 2004 and was re-elected in 2018. Justice Greenwood had been a Commercial Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in Onondaga County since 2011 and presided over Commercial Division and Tax Certiorari cases in Onondaga County, as well as medical malpractice, personal injury, and general civil cases.
Justice Greenwood served as the Chairperson of the Jury Board in Onondaga County, as the Deputy Administrative Judge for the Fifth Judicial District, as Committee Co-Chair on the Second Special Commission on Fiduciary Appointments for the New York State Office of Court Administration and as District Director for the Fifth Judicial District for the Association of Justices of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. He was also a member of the Social Media Task force for the Courts Outside of New York City. Justice Greenwood served as a mentor to new Supreme Court Justices and has been a speaker at numerous State and County Bar Association seminars.
Before taking the bench, Justice Greenwood was in private practice, concentrating in litigation, real estate, and labor law matters. He has also served as DeWitt Town Attorney, Special Counsel to several municipalities, as an Onondaga County Assistant District Attorney, Deputy County Attorney, as well as a criminal defense attorney as a member of the Assigned Counsel panel and homicide list and Law Guardian in Family Court. He was a former Board Member of the Onondaga County Bar Association and was responsible for community outreach as Chair of the Communications Committee and was creator and host of “Attorneys On-Call” television program.
Justice Greenwood is a graduate of the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business and received an MBA from the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. He is a graduate of the Syracuse University College of Law. He lives in DeWitt with his wife and two children.
